As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement, such as smiling, chewing and squinting. The underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up begin to break down, often leaving laugh lines, smile lines, crow’s feet or facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs.
It is important to understand the difference between neuromodulators and dermal fillers. Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators that work by preventing muscles from contracting so that wrinkles are softened. Dermal fillers work by plumping up creases and hollowness, restoring fullness to the face. Fillers can also be used to create fuller, more sensuous lips.
Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in our bodies that is well suited to plump lips and fill facial wrinkles. Juvederm Ultra lasts approximately 6 months, and Juvederm Ultra Plus 8-9 months.
Am I a good candidate for Juvederm?
You are good candidate for Juvederm if you have areas of wrinkles or folds that you would like to smooth and plump up. It can also be used to volumize the lips. The type of Juvederm (Ultra vs Ultra Plus) recommended will depend on the area to be treated.

During the consultation, you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from Juvederm. This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.
How will I be evaluated for Juvederm?
Our nurse or doctor will examine the areas of concern to determine the appropriate product and amount to recommend to you. You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries, and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.
How is Juvederm performed?
You will be assessed by our nurse or doctor for the appropriate type of Juvederm and amount needed. Juvederm is injected with a tiny needle, and discomfort is minimal. Most patients require retreatment in 6-8 months, depending on the type of Juvederm used.
How do I prepare for my Juvederm treatment?
Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin and Advil for two weeks prior to your appointment. Arrive your appointment with your face freshly cleaned.
Juvederm – How will I look or feel initially?
You will be able to see the results instantly. Most patients return to work immediately after treatment. You may notice some swelling, this will subside over the next 2-3 days. Ice packs applied to the treated area will help decrease swelling. As with any injection, there is a possibility that you may bruise.
