FACIAL PROCEDURES
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Aesthetic eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, removes the excess fat and wrinkled, drooping skin of the upper eyelids. It also eliminates bags under the eyes and tightens the lower eyelid skin.
If you are considering eyelid surgery, we want you to be thoroughly informed about the procedure. Below is some helpful information. A personal consultation with your plastic surgeon is the best way to obtain the additional information you will need.
Considering Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is preformed on adults of all ages. Eyelid surgery can correct problems that are due to aging as well as inherited traits.
Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have one or more of the following conditions:
- Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
- Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
- A puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
- Bags and dark circles under the eyes, often with a depression along the bony border of the lower eyelids
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris.
Your personal consultation
During the consultation you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from eyelid surgery. This will help her to understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.
How will my Plastic Surgeon evaluate me for eyelid surgery?
You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. Dr. Bernett will want to know if you suffer from any allergies, especially if they affect your eyes. It is important for you to provide complete information.
How eyelid surgery is preformed
Individual factor and personal preferences will determine the specific technique selected for your eyelid surgery.
Generally, an incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed. This incision will camouflaged when healed due to it following the natural contour of the upper eyelid.
The incision for the lower eyelid is hidden at the lower eyelash margin. The excess skin, muscles and fat are removed, or fat may be redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges. The incision will be well camouflaged by natural creases.
Understanding risks
Fortunately, significant complication from eyelid surgery are in frequent. Every year many thousands of people undergo successful eyelid surgery experience no major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and risks.
I understand that every surgical procedure has risks, but how will I learn more so that I can make and informed decision?
The subject of risks and potential complications of surgery is best discussed on a personal basis between you and your plastic surgeon. Following surgery there may be a temporary feeling of dryness or irritation in the eye. The duration of these symptoms vary in patients. You can help to lessen certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your plastic surgeon.
Your surgical experience
Our goal is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible.
If you’re a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. You will be provided, with complete preoperative instructions.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after and stay with you for at least a day or two.
