It is important to understand that the goal of double eyelid surgery is not to westernize an Asian face, but to create a crease that looks natural and complements one’s beauty. Asian blepharoplasty, also known as “asian double eyelid surgery”, creates the eyelid crease or fold that that many Asians lack. It can also create a more defined or symmetrical fold for Asians who already have a crease. At his practice, Dr. Newen offers both the suture technique and the incisional method.

Am I good candidate for asian double eyelid surgery?
The best candidate for asian double eyelid surgery are people who do not have the eyelid crease and would like to undergo the procedure to create a crease to complement their features. It is also for people who already have a crease, but want it to be more defined or symmetrical. Issues such as eyelid ptosis may also be corrected.

How will Dr. Newen evaluate me for Asian double eyelid surgery?

How is Asian double eyelid surgery performed?
The suture technique offers a virtually scarless procedure. It creates a very natural crease and the recovery is quick, usually just a few days. With the suture technique, permanent non-reactive sutures are placed in the deep soft tissue of the eyelid to create the crease. Candidates for the suture technique have: A) thin skin that does not have excessive loose skin; B) do not have a lot of upper lid fat; C) have not had prior eyelid surgery; D) whose brows are not low or heavy; E) who do not have complex eyelid problems such as ptosis (“sleepy eye”) or retraction (overly pulled upper lid).
The incisional technique is used quite often because it allows for more precision of the eyelid fold and there is no risk of fold failure as compared to the suture method. The healing time from the incisional method is approximately 1-2 weeks. The ideal candidate for the incisional technique include patients who are A) older than late 20’s, B) have excess skin or fat, C) desire a larger, dramatic fold.
Asian double eyelid surgery is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation. Medications are administered for your comfort during the procedure. You will be relaxed and sleepy during the procedure, but will be able to follow directions and open your eyes when prompted. By opening your eyes during the procedure, Dr. Newen will be able to see exactly how the fold looks and make adjustments as necessary so that your results are as near perfect as possible.
How do I prepare for my Asian double eyelid surgery?
You will be provided with complete information about what to do before your double eyelid surgery, and our staff will check up on you and make sure you are ready for your procedure. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well ahead of the surgery date. You will also be asked not to take certain medications which increase the risk of bleeding. Your double eyelid surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis, please be sure you have someone to drive you home and take care of you for the next 24 hours.
Asian Double Eyelid Surgery Recovery – How will I look and feel initially?
It is important to realize that each individual’s recovery time will be different. You will be asked to restrict your activities and relax for a few days. Elevating your head when you sleep will help to minimize swelling and bruising. You will notice puffiness and discoloration from bruising. Generally, the greatest amount of swelling occurs 24 to 48 hours after surgery, but it may take several weeks before all puffiness is resolved. Most bruising will disappear within two weeks. After surgery, there may be a temporary feeling of dryness, tearing, or irritation of the eyes. The types of symptoms experienced and the duration of the symptoms vary in patients. Most patients return to work or school within a week.

Significant complications from eyelid surgery are very rare. Dr. Newen has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries, and his patients generally do not experience any major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and risks.

Your surgical experience
Our goal is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible. If you’re a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. You will be provided with complete preoperative and postoperative instructions.
Asian double eyelid surgery is performed at Huntington Surgery Center, our outpatient surgery facility located within The Image Center. Please be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours.
