Spider-vein

Spider veins (not to be confused with varicose veins) are small red, blue and purple blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face and legs. Spider veins often get progressively worse as you age. Our laser delivers a precise dose of energy to the veins, removing them with minimal risk to the skin. Most patients require a series of 4-5 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions are usually recommended since spider veins are a recurring issue for most patients.

Am I a good candidate for spider vein removal?

You are good candidate for this procedure if you have visible veins on your legs or thighs that have a branching or web-like pattern, if you have a pattern of branching veins on your face that you try to conceal, and if you feel that your spider veins are a sign of aging that you would like to eliminate. You must also be able to stay out of the sun after your treatment for at least 4 weeks.

Your personal consultation

During the consultation, you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from laser vein removal. This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.

How will I be evaluated for laser vein removal?

Our nurse will examine the areas of concern. You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries, and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

How is the laser vein removal performed?

Our Quanta Ultrawave laser will be used to treat small to medium-sized blood vessels (one to three millimeters in diameter) that usually occur in the face and legs. During treatment, your eyes will be covered so that your corneas and retinas are protected from the laser. A handpiece is passed over your skin and the laser light is absorbed by the blood, causing the vessels to coagulate and be absorbed by the body. There may be some skin reddening, bruising, and blistering, but these side effects subside over a couple of weeks to a couple of months. There is little downtime; however, you will need to protect the area(s) treated from sun exposure. You must also wear compression stockings for the next 4 weeks to keep treated veins closed and minimize bruising.

How do I prepare for my laser vein removal treatment?

Avoid any photosensitizing topicals or medications for two weeks prior to treatment. This includes retinols, hydroquinone, glycolic acid, and antibiotics. Please arrive to your appointment with your face freshly cleansed if you having the procedure done on your face. You will also need to purchase a pair of compression stockings to wear for 4 weeks after your treatment if you are having the spider veins on your legs treated.

Laser Vein Removal – How will I look or feel initially?

The most common side effects include discomfort, swelling, and redness that last 5-7 days. Other possible side effects, although rare, can include blistering, herpes simplex outbreaks, bacterial infections and temporary skin lightening or darkening. You may apply ice packs to decrease swelling the first 24-48 hours.  Many patients report the discomfort to feel as if they had a sunburn. Spider vein treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. After laser vein removal, you will be required to wear compression stockings to maximize the chances of treatment success. You will need a series of 4-5 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart.
