Aesthetic eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, removes the excess fat and wrinkled, drooping skin of the upper eyelids. It also eliminates bags under the eyes and tightens the lower eyelid skin.

If you are considering eyelid surgery, we want you to be thoroughly informed about the procedure. Below is some helpful information. A personal consultation with Dr. Newen is the best way to obtain the additional information you will need.

Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is performed on adults of all ages. Eyelid surgery can correct problems that are due to aging as well as inherited traits. You may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • Loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
  • A puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • Bags and dark circles under the eyes, often with a depression along the bony border of the lower eyelids
  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris.
Your personal consultation

During the consultation you will be asked about the results you expect to achieve from eyelid surgery. This will help Dr. Newen understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved.

How will Dr. Newen evaluate me for eyelid surgery?

You should be prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. Dr. Newen will want to know if you suffer from any allergies, especially if they affect your eyes. It is important for you to provide complete information.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

Individual factor and personal preferences will determine the specific technique selected for your eyelid surgery.

Generally, the incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed. Once healed, this incision will barely be detectable because it follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid.

The incision for the lower eyelid is hidden at the lower eyelash margin. The excess skin and fat are removed. Dr. Newen will often redistribute the lower eye’s excess fat to create a smoother contour and eliminate puffiness or bulges. Certain patients are candidates for the “scarless” method, in which the incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid.

Understanding risks

Significant complications from eyelid surgery are very rare. Dr. Newen has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries, and his patients generally do not experience any major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and risks.

The subject of risks and potential complications of surgery is best discussed on a personal basis during your consultation with Dr. Newen. After surgery, there may be a temporary feeling of dryness, tearing, or irritation of the eyes. The types of symptoms experienced and the duration of the symptoms vary in patients.

Your surgical experience

Our goal is to make your surgical experience as easy and comfortable for you as possible. If you’re a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. You will be provided with complete preoperative and postoperative instructions.

Eyelid surgery is performed at Huntington Surgery Center, our outpatient surgery facility located within The Image Center. Please be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure and stay with you for at least 24 hours.
